PHILIP KURAVITA - www.africanphotographs.com
SafariWise sent Phil and his family to Africa in 2007. The result is a fantastic book and up coming exhibition.
North and South Tasmania shoots East and West Africa
Photography and travel are the two great loves of award winning Tasmanian Master Photographers Philip Kuruvita and Alice Bennett.
Two very different photographers and two very different trips are brought together in a beautiful photographic book Africa being launched at 6pm on Wednesday night at the Design Centre in Launceston's City Park. In 2007, on separate journeys to different parts of the vast African continent, these two photographers captured images that, back in Tasmania, have been brought together in a book celebrating their visions and experiences of this evocative land. It will resonate with anyone who has ever travelled, or dreamed of travelling, to this amazing place. Hobart-based Ms Bennett used her photographic and people skills to produce beautiful, poignant images of the people that she met on her journey. The images that she has created demonstrate an empathy and a connection to her subjects and it is evident that that picture-making process was a happy one for all involved. Operating out of Launceston, Philip concentrated on the dramatic and varied landscapes, such as the amazing 300m-high sand dunes of the Namib desert. Of course no photographic book of Africa would be complete without wildlife, and both photographers have captured some fantastic images that make this book come alive; from gentle portrait of an elephant eating grass, to the unflinching gaze of a male lion in his prime and a hippo in full yawn.
The photographs are accompanied by a brief text to accompany the reader on this journey. This is the first book for Ms Bennett and Mr Kuruvita.
The book is available from the web site www.africanphotographs.com, from the photographers or in selected bookshops.
